Thoughts about making Major 5 a LTS release with backports for a year
We have quite a fast development process when it comes to Major versions. Because of this it would be nice to have one version that exists for some time longer.
With version 5.x I think this would be a perfect first LTS release.
The plan here would be bring 6.0 when ever we feel its ready to be published, but also keep all the features from it that can be ported to 5.x, ported to 5.x.
This means that as long as 7.0 is not released, we will backport all changes to 6.x that effect features available in 5.x. If a feature is using a 6.x introduced feature that is not able to be used in 5.x due to a API change, we wont backport this feature.
Users that want the newest features would have to get the latest 6.x release.
Major releases in the past took 6 to 8 months. Thus 5.x would be kept alive for about 12 months.
This is just an Idea and I do not know if this is going to happen or not ..
